Featured Plant: Alliums

Alliums… a flowering plant that is part of the onion family. Or as I like to call them: those big purple balls.

I was inspired to add these perennials to my garden when I visited the Chicago Botanic Garden several years ago. They towered over the tulips and irises. Some were as tall as me!

This year, I don’t seem to have as many blooms, but they do seem to be taller this year. They bloom (about mid-May) right after my tulips start looking gross, so I look forward to their entrance each year.

Do you have alliums in your garden? What made you want to add them?
